The Bishop Cotton Chemical Society was inaugurated on 27th August 2019. Dr. Krishna Prasad, Scientist, Associate Editor, Bulletin of Materials Science, Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences, Bengaluru, delivered an inaugural talk on “Lead Kindly Light*: Spectroscopy and the Periodic table”. Dr. Deepak, Public Relation Officer, Centre for Nano and Soft matter sciences (CeNS) graced the occasion as Guest of honor.
The Department of Chemistry organised a visit to Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences on Saturday, the 3rd August 2019. Thirty three students and two teachers visited CeNS. Dr. Ramakrishna Matte delivered a talk on “Nano science: Small is the next big thing”. The students were enriched and motivated by his talk. Students followed up on visiting the C – Labs. Principle and instrumentation was explained for a number of instruments like X- ray Diffractometer, Infra- red Spectrometer, Atomic Absorption Spectrometer and Scanning Electron Microscope. Experiments using these instruments for characterisation of the samples were demonstrated. The Bishop Cotton Chemical Society celebrated the International Year of Periodic Table of Chemical Elements 2019 which was announced by the UNESCO. An event named Chemistry Carnival was organised in commemoration of 150th year of the Mendeleev’s Periodic Table on 12th September 2019.
Interclass competitions like chemibet, pick and speak, pictionary, guess the element and poster presentations were organized on 12th September 2019.
Intercollegiate events ‘Ad Zap and Chitrakala’ were organized by the Department of Chemistry in association with the Departments of Botany, Biotechnology and Zoology during Disha Fest on 20th September 2019.
Industrial visit to Yelahanka sewage water treatment plant was organized on 15th February 2020. Thirty three students and two teachers visited the water treatment plant. This water treatment plant is managed by BWSSB and it treats water to tertiary level. Students learnt about different processes involved in water treatment like reverse osmosis and demineralization.
As a part of Outreach Programme our students visited New Life Centre an orphanage home for girls on 22nd February 2020. Theme based skit and choreography were performed by our students to emphasize the value of women empowerment and girl child education. Indoor and outdoor activities were conducted to explain the benefits of sports like stress reduction, mental health improvement and physical fitness.
Ms. Puja Rauniyar, Research Scholar, University of Naples Federico II, Italy (alumnus of BCWCC) delivered a talk on “Career Opportunities in Science” during the Interdisciplinary Webinar held on 15th June 2020. She discussed various government funded international scholarships available for master’s program and research and motivated our students to take up higher education.
