ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR 2021 – 2022



Inauguration of Bishop Cotton Chemical Society

The Bishop Cotton Chemical Society was inaugurated on 7th February 2022. Dr. Helen Annal Therese, Professor, Department of Chemistry, SRM institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, Tamil Nadu delivered an inaugural talk on "Nanotechnology: Tiny yet massive" using the online platform – Microsoft Teams.

online outreach programme – panel discussion

Eminent women Scientists and Research Scholars of Centre for Nano and Soft matter Sciences delivered talk on various topics of Nanotechnology. Around 20 chemistry students from attended the online outreach programme – panel discussion to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science conducted by CeNS on 14th February 2022.













Local Public Exhibition

As a part of "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav" celebrations, chemistry students from II B.Sc and III B.Sc attended the Local Public Exhibition organized by the Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGQA) units in Bengaluru, Defence Institute of Quality Assurance (DIQA), CQA(WE), QAE(WE/EPC) and QAE(N) Kochi from 13th to 19th December 2021.
Students were displayed the journey of Defence Quality Assurance over last 75 years. Defence equipment, Arms and Ammunitions/ Cut models/ Sectioned Models, Testing facilities, Certification process of defence equipments etc., and also the functioning of DGQA were exhibited.

Microscopy of Nanoworld

The Department of Chemistry organised a visit to Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences on Friday, the 17th December 2021. Dr. Neena Susan John delivered a talk on "Microscopy of Nanoworld". The students were enriched and motivated by her talk. Students followed up on visiting the Characterization – Labs. Principle and instrumentation was explained for a number of instruments like X- ray Diffractometer, Infra- red Spectrometer, Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, Transmission Electron microscope, Confocal Raman Microscope, Circular Dichroism Spectropolarimeter, Differential Scanning Calorimeter, FT – IR Spectrometer, Optical Fluorescence, Projection lithography, UV – Visible spectrometer, Solar simulator, Thermal Evaporation system and Scanning Electron Microscope. Principle involving these instruments for experimentation and research were demonstrated.





Industrial visit

An Industrial visit to the Sula Vineyards and Karnataka Milk Federation, Channapatna and Mysore was organized in collaboration with the Departments of Chemistry, Botany and Biotechnology on 9th June 2022. Students were given an opportunity to visit the units of fermentation, wine processing, packaging as well as tasting.

Inter-class competition on “Sustainable chemistry to save our surroundings”

An Inter-class chemistry competition on the theme "Sustainable chemistry to save our surroundings" was held on 16th June 2022 for I B.Sc, II B.Sc and III B.Sc students to imbibe creative learning for understanding the concepts in chemistry. Events like Cartooning and Chemitect were conducted to help students analyze the importance of 3R – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and to save our surroundings by following sustainable chemistry principles.
