• Amitha Santiago participated in the Religion, Theology and Dalits conference organized by USPG and CISRS on Jan 5th- 7th, 2023 at the Ecumenical Christian Centre, Whitefield, Bangalore.
• April 12th and 13th, 2023 – Multidisciplinary Joint Conference organized by Bishop Cotton Women’s Christian Post Graduate Centre, Dept. of English Studies in collaboration with the University of Madras, Chennai, on the Theme “Conversing with the Other within: Race, Religion and Gender in the Global South”. All our faculty and students presented papers and chaired sessions. The International multi-disciplinary conference saw participants from Coventry University, University of Exter, Oxford University, Manipal University, Madras University, University College of Shillong, Jain University, Ecumenical Christian Centre, United Theological College, the Karnataka Central Diocese, etc. We had 58 papers presented over 11 sessions conducted in hybrid mode across two days.
• June 20th, 2023, Lumos Conference at St Claret College, our students Sharon Cordelia and Neha Jha presented papers:
1. Sharon Cordelia Christy on a paper titled “From Webtoon to Drama: Social Identity Theory, Bullying and Iteration.”
2. Neha Jha: The Fading Fad of Oral Storytelling: Yakshagana in Karnataka
COLLOQUIM
Dr Amitha Santiago was a panelist at the CSI Platinum Jubilee Colloquium on the theme: “Envisioning Together an Open Church in an Open World.” The Title of the talk was The Open Church as a Space of Learning” on the 17th of September, 2022.
WORKSHOPS
• Workshop Series 3: “The Ordinariness of Culture: Believing, Eating and Cooking” was conducted by Dr Mrinalini Sebastian, Site Coordinator, Grace Trinity UCC, Philadelphia on the 2nd of September, 2022.
• A Field Trip was conducted to the National Modern Art Gallery as part of the European Literature paper’s focus on Modernism in Europe on 29th September, 2022.
• On April 8th,, 2023 a One-Day Research Writing Workshop on Research Methodology, Presentation and Research Article writing was conducted at the Modern Art Gallery by the faculty of the English Department.
Students Participated in Lumiere O’Lit, a two-day Seminar on the theme: “Exploring the Cultures and Society in 21st Century” at Bengaluru Central University on the 12th and 13th September, 2022.
FILM FESTIVAL
• On 28th June, 2023 a One Day Social Justice Film Fest was conducted for the UG and PG students of the English department by documentary film maker and founder of Marupakkam Mr. Amudhan R.P.
GUEST LECTURES
• A Guest Lecture by resource person Mrs. Soumya Ramasamy was conducted on “Absurdity in the Myth of Sysiphus and Kafka” for the Students of the English Department across the U.G., PUC and P.G. of Bishop Cotton Women’s Christian College on July 4th, 2023.
On the 14th of July, 2023 a lecture on “Derrida’s Structure, Sign and Play in the Discourse of the Human Sciences” was delivered by Dr Amitha Santiago, organized by Ms Samantha Christopher.
• A Guest Lecture organized by Ms Samantha Christopher on Simone de Beauvoir’s “Letters to Sartre” was delivered by Dr Allan Palanna took place on July 26th, 2023.
DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES
• Jan 14th,2023 was the Department Welcome for Fresher’s. It was attended by the new batch of 2023 along with their seniors, resource persons and faculty.
On January 18th 2023 the Investiture Ceremony took place at the Post Graduate Centre Seminar Hall.
• On April 12th, 2023 a Faculty- Student Interface with Prof. Hemachander, IIT, Madras, Department of English and Dr James Ponniah, Christian Studies HoD, Madras University was held by the MA English Studies department in IIT, Madras campus.
• On April 13th, 2023 a faculty meeting with Prof. Swarnalatha IIT, Madras, English Dept. and Dr James Ponniah, Christian Studies HoD, Madras University and Dr Amitha Santiago, Dean and Hod, MA English Studies, BCWCC was held to explore future prospects and collaborations.
• The Annual Sports Day saw our students participating in events that took place on June 9th, 2023.
• A Thanksgiving Service for the graduating class of 2021-2023 took place on July 31st, 2023.
BOOK CLUB
• February 1st 2023- the MA English Book Club “Enheduanna” was inaugurated by Prof. Leena Karanth, HoD UG Department of English, Prof. Soumya, HoD Department of English and Ms. Rose Francis, Librarian, UG &PG Library, BCWCC. This event saw participation from the U.G., P.U.C. and P.G. faculty and students. The book under discussion was Tagore’s “Gora”.
