An Orientation for the I year Post Graduate Students of English was organized by the Department on the 4 th of November 2024 at 10:30 am in the HRD Block. The new batch of students was welcomed with an ice breaker session of games organized by the second-year students. This was followed by a formal introduction of all the students. The students were then briefed about the course in detail, highlighting the papers of the course and the methods of preparation for the course. They were also briefed about the rules and regulations of the college, the requirement of 75% of attendance, and the modest code of dressing. The activities that would be organized throughout the year were also highlighted. The day concluded with the distribution of the timetable for the semester and some refreshments for all the students.

A visit was organized to Amrutha Shishu Nivasa on the 10 th of December 2024. There were about 200 children in the organization from kindergarten to X std. At the time of our visit, only the kinder garden children were at the home since it was a weekday. We introduced ourselves briefly and this was followed by a time of singing rhymes and storytelling. Dr. Allan Pallana , faculty member, narrated a story in Kannada on the importance of education, which was greatly enjoyed by the students. The children then sang a few rhymes for us in Kannada. Our students taught them a few new songs. We contributed cash towards the needs of the home along with stationery items for the children. We returned home with the satisfaction of having done our little bit in spreading a little bit of joy and happiness around.

A talk was organized on the various career opportunities open to students on the completion of their post-graduation in English. The Resource Person was Ms. Samantha Christopher, Faculty, Dept of English, PG. She encouraged students to identify their strengths and weaknesses through a questionnaire and then briefed them on the various opportunities available in the field of English today. The Students thoroughly enjoyed the session. This was followed by the creative writing competition. Students were given well-known stories and were told to give a new twist to the stories. Afifa and Manju. B of II MA won the first and second place in the creative writing event.

The Postgraduate students of English attended the Nobel insight lecture series organized by MES College on the 20 th of November, and found it very beneficial.
Book Club Initiative: Quiz and Story writing Competition.png)
A Quiz and Story writing competition was organized for the I and II MA students. In the Quiz competition, multiple choice questions were asked on authors and their works. For the second competition-story writing, an outline was given and the students had to expand the outline into a story of 500 words. Khanita Anum and Ramya S of I MA won the first and second place in story writing.
In view of ‘Disha-the Inter-collegiate Literary and Cultural Fest’, the Dept of English PG organized the event – ‘picture composition’. Pictures were shown to the participants and based on the pictures, they were allowed to either compose a poem or write a short story. There were 25 participants from various colleges and the event was truly enjoyed by them.

Elections were conducted class-wise for the various posts of the class, such as class, sports, cultural and chapel representative. This year, book club representative were also chosen. Students wishing to contest for the post were told to speak for a minute about their strengths and weaknesses and what they would do if given the post. Elections were held democratically and the representatives were installed in office during the investiture ceremony on the 18 th of January 2025.
The PG Department of English in association with ‘Zoi Axia Foundation’ organized a Guest lecture and a Collage Competition on the theme ‘Protecting Wetlands for our Common Future’. The Resource Person was Ms. Adeline Rebecca, Co-Founder Zoi Axia Foundation. She highlighted the need of protecting wetlands and the benefits of preserving wetlands universally. She emphasized the importance of sustainability through wetlands for all organisms on the earth. She also brought out the fact that small initiatives can go a long way in preserving and protecting our wetlands for future generations. A collage competition was conducted on the topic ‘Wetlands: A Hidden Treasure’. The entries were judged by the resource person and certificates of appreciation were distributed to the winners along with certificates of participation to all participants

A guest lecture was organized for the second-year students on select works of Shri Kuvempu, Shri U. R Ananathamuthy and Shri Gopala Krishna Adiga on the 5 th of February 2025. The Resource Person was Dr. M.C.Prakash, former Principal and Associate Professor of Vidhya Vardhaka Sangha. The resource person brought the prescribed pieces of the above-mentioned authors to life with his in-depth knowledge of the subject and his inimitable style of speaking. There was a combination of facts and humour which kept the attention of the audience from the beginning to the end. He provided a thorough background to the author, the text and read pieces of the work both in the original language -Kannada and in the translated language -English. Everyone in the audience found the session truly beneficial both from the exam point of view as well as the experience of having witnessed a great session.

An Interdisciplinary guest lecture was organized for all disciplines of Post Graduation on the topic ‘You are what you eat’. The Resource Person was Dr. Marie Kavitha, Head, Dept of Home Science. The Resource person highlighted the importance of a healthy meal. She emphasized that small steps of eating healthy can lead to healthy living. She also explained the basics of a healthy meal and the techniques of a healthy routine that can be adopted on an everyday basis. Through graphs and charts, a comparative study was shown of healthy eating across the world, leading to a healthy lifestyle. Health tips were also shared, such as easy preparation of a snack and foods that could be avoided. Everyone in the audience found the session very useful and a learning for life.
