NEP SYLLABUS (Program Specific Outcome):


Students will be able to understand and appreciate various dimensions of mass communication. They will be able to develop an understanding of the fundamental concepts in journalism, analyze the scope/various dimensions in journalism, discuss the recent trends in mass media, and also analyze and review different newspapers.


Students will understand the basic concepts of computer and develop an understanding of the applications of computers in print and electronic journalism. They will get acquainted with internet applications and apply information technology skills in print and broadcast projects along with demonstration of web-based broadcasting skills.


Students will learn to organize and articulate news stories, understand the concepts, structure, and types of news. They will be able to formulate skills for news selection, process, prioritize and finally, design the end product, and also identify the basic ethical issues confronting editors and how they can practice fair play.


Students will learn the functioning of the editorial department by understanding the role of editors. They will learn to edit copy using correct grammar and right usage of words. Students will learn to write clear and accurate headlines, decks, and captions. They will be able to design basic news pages and understand the ethical issues confronting editors.

Open Elective- Journalism

Students are made familiar with writing for media and develop interest in writing and they are introduced to cultivating of sources. Students are equipped with new trends in media writing.

Students are familiarized to the techniques of photography and photo journalism. They are provided with practical knowledge in the field of photography and attract students to work behind the lens.

Students will be able to organize and articulate feature stories by understanding the concepts, structure, and types of features. Students learn to write different types of feature stories and are encouraged to get them published. The students learn to try their hand in freelancing writing by acquiring knowledge about the ups and downs of freelancing.

Students will understand the difference between translations for different media and practice it. They will be able to translate the given stories keeping in mind the requirements of the client by gaining mastery over the techniques of translation.


  • The study of journalism is an exciting tale of the Pen fighting along with the Sword of happenings around the society. Advertising, Public Relations, Print, Television, Radio, Films, New Media, Digital Media and Corporate Communication makes the subject challenging and creative.

  • Journalism course is offered along with optional English, Psychology, History, Economics and Political Science. While studying Optional English enhances command over the language, Psychology helps them to analyse situations with ease which is very much essential in the media profession. History, Economics and Political Science subjects make students to understand the past, economy, political system and Indian constitution.

  • The various job opportunities in the media field provide a wide spectrum for the students to choose their career based on their specialisation and interest.

  • Reporters, Sub editors, correspondents, columnists, editorial writers, magazine editors, feature writers, movie reviewers, freelancers & Press photographers jobs await them in print media.

  • Electronic media provides a platform for the students to exhibit their skills as News anchors, news readers, news writers, correspondents, reporters, production assistant, program executives, cameraman, studio editor, anchoring, script writing and many more.

  • Event managers, public relations officers, corporate communicators, online journalists, copy writers, Creative Directors, documentary film maker, content writer and many more bouquets of job opportunities are available in the mass communication profession which many of our students have successfully embarked upon.

  • Journalism teaching is both creative and challenging since it involves balancing the subject with ethics and teaching theory subject with the practical approach. The communication technology has revolutionized the mass communication teaching as well as the profession in the present information society posing a challenge to the media teachers and journalists.

  • The practical oriented assignments and projects has enabled our students to scale greater heights in the media profession. While few present students of journalism are bloggers, poets, content writers, emcee & host corporate events, many alumni students are well placed in various media organizations

Programme Specific Objective:


  • The motto of the subject is to impart journalism education with pragmatic and practical approach. Innovative teaching & learning methods such as producing short film/documentary, blog/vlogs, PPT presentations, conducting interviews, bringing out Newsletter, movie review, preparing advertisement copy and internships enables our students to learn theory subject with practical insight.
  • Department brings out Lab Journal PRISM to hone the writing skills of budding Journalists and also to learn the nuances of print media. Students also bring out one page newsletter to learn the copy-editing skills.
  • Students produce documentary films on social problems as part of their assignments and also screen them in the inter-collegiate fests.
  • Soft skill training workshops are conducted by renowned Corporate Trainers as part of Deccan Herald in Education program. These workshops enable our students to learn effective communication skills, writing skills, presentation skills as well as to cope up with stress management. Certificates of soft skill training workshops add value to their career prospects.
  • Students are encouraged & guided to present papers in the International and National seminars and have own ‘Best paper Presentation’ prizes also. Students undergo internships in various media organizations.
