Zoology Reports:


The students of III B.Sc. were taken for a visit to “Yediyur Bio Converge” in Jayanagar on 13th December 2022, where they learnt the various steps involved in the process of solid waste management. The solid waste management process involved the collection of vegetable and food wastes, separating them, grinding them, processing them through semi digester and main digester which results in the formation of methane gas, storing this gas and finally converting it to electricity. A total of 42 students and 2 lecturers went for the visit.

The Department of Zoology organized a Guest Lecture on “Well Being” on 09th January 2023. The Resource persons for the day were Dr. Prakruthi K.P., MBBS, DGO, and Fellowship in Feto-Maternal Medicine, Senior Consultant, Rangadore Memorial Hospital, Bangalore and Dr. Bhargavi Brahmakal, MBBS, MRCOG (UK) Consultant O&G, Rangadore Memorial Hospital, Bangalore. The doctors spoke about the current issues faced by the youth such as micronutrient deficiency, balanced diet, obesity, menstrual concerns, hormonal variations, PCOs, menstrual hygiene and sexually transmitted diseases. Totally 80 UG students, 30 PG students and 4 Lecturers had participated in the Guest lecture.

The PUC students were addressed on the ‘’Open day Exhibition’’ by the faculty about the different courses offered by the Zoology department and NEP curriculum regulation on 13th and 14th of December 2022. The students also got to know about their career options, and also the various activities conducted and recent student achievements. There was a total of 75 PUC students from Bishop Cotton Women’s Christian College who had participated in the exhibition.

The department of Zoology organized a guest lecture on Bioinformatics on 26th May 2023. The guest speaker was Dr. Anushree Narjala, who is an Associate Scientist at Mediomix. The speaker provided a comprehensive overview of the field, its methodologies, and its applications. She demonstrated various techniques that can be used to understand evolutionary relationships and help trace the origin of pathogens. She also illustrated the significance of sequence alignment through practical examples. Important topics like Biological Databases and its tools like GenBank, FASTA and BLAST were covered. She also discussed the interplay between biology and computer science. Totally 45 students and 3 Lecturers had participated in the Guest lecture.

The department of Zoology organized a guest lecture for the students and faculty on “Social awareness” on 10th July 2023 to give awareness on ‘Organ donation’. The speaker of the day was Mrs. Ranjini Sankar MS, Project manager, Mohan Foundation, Bangalore. The speaker’s lecture was very informative on various aspects of organ donation. She also spoke on the eligibility criteria for organ donation, the different types of donations (live and dead), tissue and corneal donation as well as brain death. The students found the lecture very useful. There were totally 70 students and 5 lecturers present. The department of Zoology conducted an event SPELL – CHAMP on the topic ‘Biological Science’ during the intercollegiate fest DISHA, on 5th July 2023. The students participated quite enthusiastically and won the prizes.

The department of Zoology along with other Life Science departments jointly arranged a 5-day trip from 19th July to 23rd July 2023 to Hyderabad for 37 students and 4 Lecturers. They visited the National Institute of Nutrition in Secunderabad, Telangana, India, where Dr. Gondru Ramesh and his team showcased the various laboratories, including food chemistry, analytical chemistry, and study of proteins, fatty acids, and fat-soluble vitamins. The students learned about different techniques such as GC-MS, HPLC, Gas chromatography and also other Instruments and their mechanisms.

They also visited the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology in Hyderabad, where they were given an overview by the Scientist Dr. Sanjay before visiting the various labs. Scientist Dr. Naveen explained the Mol bank, which preserves over 60 lakh molecules that can be preserved under cryogenic atmosphere using liquid nitrogen. The students also visited the Biological Science department and were briefed about the production and testing of tablets and the use of instruments like Chromatography, Centrifuge, etc.

The students were also taken to places like Charminar, Ramoji Film City and NTR Garden where they had a chance to see different varieties of birds, butterflies, and bonsai garden for them to have some entertainment and enjoyment.

The department of Zoology organized an Interdisciplinary guest lecture on ‘‘Recent Developments In GST’’, on 4th August 2023. The guest speaker was Dr. Saadia Hameed, Department of Commerce, Bishop Cotton Women’s Christian College.

Mrs. Saadia Hameed spoke on the GST rates for various items at different levels, the output tax and input tax and the information on the registration and documents required for GST enrolment. There were totally 45 students and 2 lecturers present.

The students had the opportunity to participate in model making, project works, assignments and presentation based on their syllabus, on topics pertaining to the curriculum. They had also helped in putting up a department Bulletin board on the topic ‘PCOD’, ‘PCOS’ and ‘CANCER’ which helped them to gain more knowledge on these topics. Special coaching classes were organized, and revision tests were conducted for slow learners.
