Zoology Reports:


1. MODEL MAKING/EXHIBITION
The students had the opportunity to participate in model making and project work based on their syllabus, covering topics from the curriculum. Specifically, the students of I B.Sc. were asked to prepare models of nitrogenous bases- nucleosides and nucleotides, as well as amino acids, dipeptides, DNA and RNA.

2. QUIZ
On the occasion of Earth Week, the Department of Zoology conducted an Interclass e-Quiz competition on the topic ‘The Earth’ on April 19, 2024. The quiz was held to raise awareness about Earth Week. A total of 50 students participated and received e-certificates.

3. INDUSTRIAL VISIT/ FIELD VISIT
- Visit to the Departments of Apiculture and Sericulture, College of Agriculture, GKVK, Bengaluru on 13th December 2023, where the students gained valuable experience in the fields of Sericulture and Apiculture.

- The Department of Zoology along with other Life Science departments had jointly arranged a 5-day trip from 19th June to 23rd June 2024 to Mahabalipuram and Puducherry for 40 Students and 4 Lecturers. The students were taken to India Sea Shell Museum, Mahabalipuram Beach and Monuments, Crocodile Bank, Cave Temple, Blue Bay Culture Shrimp Hatchery at Marakkanam near Puducherry, Rock Beach, French Colony, Sri Aurobindo Hand Paper Factory, Auroville, Eden Beach and Pichavaram Mangrove Forest Boating. The students not only enjoyed the trip but also found it fruitful

4. WORKSHOP
The Department of Zoology along with other Life Science departments and Eco watch club, jointly arranged a workshop “Wealth from waste: The Science and Benefits of Vermicomposting” on 22nd November 2023. The resource person for the day was Dr. Latha, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, Maharani Cluster University, Bangalore. Dr. Latha spoke on the vermiculture and the conditions for composting, the general steps to follow for vermicomposting, types of composting units, harvest, packaging of end products, advantages of vermicomposting, economic importance of vermiculture, and composting as a business. The students gained practical knowledge by attending the workshop.

5. GUEST LECTURE
In alignment with the curriculum, the Department of Zoology conducted a guest lecture on “Field Equipment used in Wildlife Census and Identification of Wild Animals” on 6th June 2024. The guest speaker was Mr. Chandan B.S., a research scholar, Department of Applied Zoology, Mangalore University. He discussed various field equipment such as Spotting scopes, Range Finders, Global Positioning Systems, Compasses, Binoculars and various types of cameras and lenses. Additionally, he explained how to identify wild animals by tracing the animal’s pugmarks, hoof marks, scars, pellet groups, nest and antlers. The students thoroughly enjoyed the lecture and had benefited immensely.

6. OUTREACH PROGRAMME
An outreach programme was organized during the Christmas season for the B.Sc. students to visit the Joel Memorial Charitable Trust in Wilson Garden, Bangalore, on 18th December 2023. The students celebrated Christmas with the residents of the Trust, which shelters young and old men, women, youth and children and the physically disabled. The programme started with an opening prayer and carol singing by the students. Some of the elders at the Trust shared their life experiences, which motivated and inspired. Through their interactions, the students also understood the importance of celebrating Christmas as a season for sharing and caring. They distributed items that the Trust required and left with cherished memories.
