Hindi is one of the largest spoken languages in the world with an enriched history of literature dating back to 11th century A.D till date. It started with the works of Chand Vardayi during the period of 1149-1200 century. Down the ages, thousands of literary stalwarts have enriched the Hindi literature and language beyond imagination and today it is recognised at the global level.
It is the language which has received maximum number of Jnanapeeth Awards followed by Kannada. In this context, the students who take Hindi literature as their language or optional subject at their UG level, definitely get to know it's various dimensions and periodical changes, thus equipping themselves with the thorough knowledge of understanding and appreciating it's contribution in today's modern world and society. They cultivate the ability to analyse the literature based on social issues, because literature is a reflection of the society, the changes in the social set up as per time and various other influencing factors, which inspire the various forms of literature.
Language is a powerful tool with which we can develop effective communication with people and society. The students of today, who will be citizens of tomorrow, have a very important role to play. Hence, Language education plays a vital role. When it comes to the UG level, definitely the syllabus framed has an abundance importance in helping them to mould themselves into better individuals and create a better society or improvise the same for the progress of the country. It creates an awareness towards inculcating the values of nationality, patriotism, equality, harmony and social and cultural unity as well.
In the classroom teaching, the department of Hindi aims at implementing the above- mentioned aspects and create an awareness towards the necessity of accepting the language of Hindi, both at the National as well as at the State level along with their mother tongue. We encourage and motivate the students to develop the skills of understanding and appreciating the importance of Hindi at the macro level. We cover the subjects starting from grammar which is a must for understanding language at its best.
During their tenure at the UG level, they are exposed to many facets of Hindi literature and language like the classification of the entire period of literature, phonetics, grammar, various forms of prose and poetry, criticism, contextual importance and reference, appreciating and justifying the titles of prose selections, translation, official and commercial letters of correspondence, precise writing, comprehension, film review etc., to name a few. This kind of curriculum will definitely create an interest among the students and motivates them to explore the bigger world of language and literature, which is descriptive at large.
We encourage them to be more clear in their communication skills by conducting various literary competitions during the Hindi Pakhwada conducted by the department every year. They participate in intra-college as well as inter-college literary competitions like quiz, debate, poetry- recitation etc., They are assigned tasks and projects regarding the literature aspect by the department, wherein they come out with their creativity and develop the quality of comradeship and team work also.
Hindi is a link language and it bridges the gap between people. The language is so flexible that it has been accepting new words and modifying its structure from time to time, thus presenting itself as s friendly language to be accepted and appreciated by each and every one. We, in the department, make the students realize all these facts and encourage them to pursue their higher education and do Research Programme in the field of Hindi language and literature.
The department of Hindi has a hardworking and dedicated faculty which has been supporting this concept and helping the students to be job- oriented also. An awareness is created towards various job opportunities for their livelihood like getting selected as News Readers, Hindi Officers, Advisors, Journalists, Typists, stenographers, Translators (online and offline), Professors, Teachers, Tutors, DTP operators etc., in Government and Private Organisations, Sectors and Institutions in our country as well as abroad. We, in the department concentrate not only on the teaching part of the curriculum, but also guide the students towards their overall development and personality enhancement by inculcating value based education and soft skills. We discuss about the importance of language in the present globalised world highlighting on the point that no matter how good they might be in the subject, but they can't be successful until and unless they don't have a hold and command over the language because language defines their personality.
It's indeed a matter of pride that the Hindi students of the 2018-2019 batch enacted a drama on 'Alakh Azadi Ki', written by Shri. Susheel Kumar Singh, a renowned literary person of Hindi, who trained the students for almost a month and they performed the same on the stage in Ranga Mandira, Bangalore, on 1st October, 2018. It was first of its kind in Bangalore, where the writer who is a stage artist as well as a Director himself, has trained the students who didn't have an idea of any sort of stage performance. It was widely appreciated by one and all. It's in fact a matter of great pride and achievement for the department and the college as well.
India is a multi-lingual country, with varied traditional, cultural, social, linguistic background and differences. Hence, we need one common language which makes us stand united. Here, the role of Hindi as a language plays a vital role. During the UG training programme, we emphasise on the fact that they can create an awareness in the society regarding this matter. Teaching Hindi language and literature doesn't restrict itself only to the class room teaching, but also focuses on implementing the same at a broader level also. We believe that to be good at anything, one should be good at the language first.
Hence, we the faculty of the department have been putting in efforts to sensitize the students regarding the relationship between the language, literature and various other social issues, which have been put forward and expressed in the literary works since a very long time, so that they can create a fleet of young and aspiring literary people, who can come out with their creative and realistic thoughts and ideas through literature and further strengthen the same.
